The Mediterranean Games - The Lesser-known Olympic Games
Although the Mediterranean Games are less well-known than the Olympic Games, they are overseen by the International Olympic Committee. The games, primarily for countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea, have been held every four years since 1951 and are now held the year following the summer Olympics. This year will be the 16th running of the Mediterranean Games.The Mediterranean Games are becoming increasingly popular and growing in importance. The last Mediterranean Games were held in Spain with 21 participating countries and more than 3000 athletes. Italy currently holds the most Mediterranean Game medals, 1786 total.
Sports in the Mediterranean Games include Aquatics, Archery, Basketball, Bowls, Boxing, Canoe-Kayak, Cycling, Equestrian, Fencing, Football, Golf, Gymnastics, Handball, Paralympic sports, Judo, Karate, Rowing, Sailing, Shooting, Table Tennis, Tennis, Track and Field, Volleyball and Beach Volleyball, Weightlifting and Wrestling.

Pescara, the 2009 Mediterranean Games location, is on the east coast of Italy in the Abruzzo region (see Abruzzo region map).
