Ponte Vecchio, or old bridge, is one of the top sights in Florence, Italy. The oldest bridge crossing the Arno River, the original bridge probably dates back to Roman times. After a flood, it was reconstructed in 1345 and changed from defensive to public, adding rows of shops to the bridge. More shops were added later and Ponte Vecchio became a top place for gold and silver shopping in Renaissance Florence.
Ponte Vecchio is the only surviving bridge from Florence's medieval days (others were destroyed in World War II). The bridge is still lined with shops selling gold and jewelry as well as tourist souvenirs. From the bridge, you'll have a great view along the Arno River and beyond.
