The Stura Valley, Valle Stura, is in the Piedmont region between the town of Cuneo and the French border (see Piedmont Map for Cuneo location). It's stunningly beautiful, especially in spring when it's blanketed with wildflowers. It's also a good area for winter skiing. This is my favorite route for traveling from Italy into France.
Forte di Vinadio, along the route, is an important nineteenth century fortress. Parts of the fortress still remain.
