Michelangelo's Moses occupies the center of a work called "Tomb of Pope Julius II", despite the fact that Julius, who commissioned the work, is buried in St. Peter's. The work was part of a larger plan for a grandiose tomb, but Michelangelo was diverted by the painting of the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. Julius died before the tomb was completed, and his heirs opted for a smaller, cheaper tomb in St. Peters. What was left of the tomb is what you see today installed in the Basilica of St. Peter in Chains. More: Where to See Michelangelo's Art in Rome
