Lake Como, north of Milan, is one of Italy's most beautiful and most popular lakes.
The walled town of Como is the main town on Lake Como and makes a good base for exploring the lake, especially if you're traveling by train. From Como, you can take a boat or bus to other parts of the lake or go up on the funicular to the village of Brunate for hiking trails and beautiful views.
Como has lively squares with cafes, several interesting churches and museums, good restaurants, shopping, and pleasant walks along the lake. There's also a temple to Volta, Como's favorite son, that holds his relics including the famous battery.
