A half hour north of Milan, Lake Como can get packed with visiting Milanese on weekends. Known for its lavish villas, a drive around the lake is mandatory if you have a car.
Bellaggio is known as la perla del lago (the pearl of the lake), and is considered by to be the most beautiful town on Lake Como, if not in Italy.
You can take the funivia to Brunate for a spectacular view of Lake Como and surounding hills, and cool off in the summer from the altitude as well. Hikers can take the footpath up to Monte Boletto for the same effect.
