Valsesia

Valsesia is dominated by the impressive outline of Monte Rosa, and is hewn out from the precipitous mountains east of the Valle d'Aosta. The ski resort of Alagna is the gateway to a paradise made up of 180 kilometres of runs - Monterosaski, one of the largest skiing districts in Europe, now that the link with Gressoney and Champoluc in Valle d'Aosta is open. Here every skier can find a run suited to their own taste and ability. Alagna's 2000 metres' height difference is made up of a multitude of different slopes, steep snowy channels and broad valleys covered in powdery snow, and has won it the name of "Free Ride Paradise".

Special: Alagna Valsesia - Off-piste slopes in this area are among the longest and most exciting in the whole of the Alps, with over 2,500 metres in height difference. There are also routes for steep skiing enthusiasts, where professionals can make serious career progress. Monte Rosa is also a perfect place for ski mountaineering, and provides an opportunity to get to know the mountains. Skiers have to climb back up the slopes using sealskin, and snowboarders using snowshoes; hard work but worth it for the spectacular views. The Alta Valsesia Nature Park is the highest in Europe, Punta Gnifetti on the Monte Rosa massif measuring 4,559 metres, and is the ideal location for ski and snowboard mountaineering.

The Ossola Valley and Lakes Tourist District

There are facilities and installations for downhill skiing in the well-known local resorts of Macugnaga, Domobianca, San Domenico Ciamporino, Valle Vigezzo, Alpe Devero, and Valle Formazza. There are also well-tended cross-country skiing routes suitable for all abilities that pass through landscapes of incomparable beauty in Formazza, Santa Maria Maggiore, Trasquera, Macugnaga, Antronapiana, Alpe Devero and Domobianca. Ski mountaineering deserves a separate mention as the wide crown of the Lepontine Alps offers plentiful itineraries in beautiful surroundings at various levels of difficulty. The Ossolane Alpine guides offer highly professional services, while the local CAI (Alpine Club) branches run courses for enthusiasts to learn and practice this specialisation.

The Lanzo and Canavese Valleys
