Pisa's Romanesque-style bell tower is one of Europe's most famous towers. Construction was begun in 1173 and because of the weight, the tower started leaning immediately. Known as the Leaning Tower, or Torre Pendente, it's 54 meters tall and has a spiral staircase with 294 steps leading to the top of the tower.
The was closed in 1990 for engineers to reverse the tilt. The Leaning Tower reopened in 2001 and is one of Pisa's top visitor attractions.
