Galla Placidia was the daughter, wife, sister, and mother of Roman Emperors. She had the mausoleum built in the mid-5th century. Although the outside is very plain, the inside is breath taking. The cupola of the tiny monument is covered with stars. The mosaics are some of the oldest in the city but are in excellent condition. The tomb contains three sarcophagi, one fifth century, one sixth century, and an undecorated Roman one.
