Trattoria al Ponte

I often hear complaints that restaurants in Venice are expensive and not very good. Prices at Trattoria al Ponte del Megio are about average for Venice and the food is very good.

Trattoria al Ponte del Megio

Trattoria al Ponte del Megio is a small restaurant with outdoor dining along a canal in nice weather. It specializes in good fresh fish and typical Venetian dishes. The menu includes seafood, meat, and vegetarian options and daily specials are written on a board by the front door. We saw both tourists and locals eating here.

Pasta dishes at Trattoria al Ponte

Arriving at Trattoria al Ponte, we were immediately drawn to the specials on the board. Daily specials can be a good choice, often drawing on whatever is fresh that day. We tried three and weren't disappointed by any of them.

We started with an octopus and celery salad and stuffed fried zucchini flowers, both specials of the day. The octopus was tender and dressed with good olive oil. Fresh zucchini flowers, fiore di zucca, were stuffed with cheese and deep fried but not greasy at all.

Trattoria al Ponte is a great place to try the traditional Venetian spaghetti al nero di seppie, black spaghetti made with cuttlefish ink. I order this dish often in Italian seafood restaurants and theirs was one of the best I've had. The pasta was perfectly flavored and the seppie (cuttlefish) was very tender. James had the pasta special, spaghetti with zucchini flowers and shrimp, also very good.

Cost of Lunch at Trattoria al Ponte del Megio

We each had a quarter liter of house wine, one a sparkling white and one still, for 3.50 euro. Our total bill including cover charge, mineral water, and coffee, came to 59 euro. (Fall 2008)

The menu had several appetizers including a mixed seafood plate. Both pasta and second courses on the menu included meat, fish, and vegetarian options. Desserts looked good but we were too full to try one.

Trattoria al Ponte del Megio is in Santa Croce Sestiere or district - see Venice Sestiere Map. It's on Calle Larga by the Megio Bridge. One of the best features of this restaurant is the canal side outdoor tables making it a great location on nice days.

We visited Venice in October 2010, and found this restaurant a 2 minute walk from our B&B. After checking it out for two days on our way to sightseeing, we decided to call in for a quick meal a little earlier than is usual in Venice. The service was friendly, informative and well spaced. Our choices were excellent and followed the recommendations of the head waiter. Our entree was delicious (see photo) and the mains followed suit. I had a local fish which was filleted for me following grilling and my husband had steak. Both meals were enjoyable. We had traveled extensively in Japan and then to the UK and Europe on this trip and found the food in this restaurant to be delightful and on a par with any we tasted. The restaurant filled to capacity twice over before we left and all the food we sighted looked very appetising. Our waiter suggested a local wine to complement the food and this turned out to be a very good choice. We enjoy our wine, being from the Hunter Valley in NSW, Australia, and were happy to go along with the local suggestions made by our waiters. We were not disappointed. In all, the cost was 90 Euros and worth every cent. Put Al Ponte on your list to visit.
