Guide Review - Venice Restaurant Review - I Quattro Rusteghi

Ristorante Ai Quattro Rusteghi serves well-prepared typical Venetian and Levantine dishes in the heart of the ancient Jewish Ghetto in Venice's Cannaregio district. On my visit to the restaurant there were tables of both tourists and locals. There was an English menu available and our waiter explained dishes to us when we had questions and helped us choose what to try.

For our first course, we chose two traditional Venetian dishes: Bigoi con salsa and Spaghetti alla Busara. The first is a thick spaghetti topped with an anchovy and onion sauce. The slightly spicay Busara sauce is made with onions and tomatoes and the spaghetti alla Busara is served with scampi on top. Both pastas were very good.

Next we shared a fish in a gondola - fish baked in parchment paper and then folded to look like a gondola. It was baked with tomatoes, olives, capers, potatoes, and white wine.

We had the house white wine, decent but a little expensive. The three monthly special bottles, listed on the last page of the menu, would probably have been a better choice and cost slightly less (10 euro instead of 7 for a half liter of house wine).

Our total bill (October 2008) was 56 euro including tax and service for two pastas, one fish dish, a salad, wine, and water.
