The Palio of Siena is one of the most well-known Italian festivals. Run two times, July 2 and August 16, the main palio event is the historic horse race around Siena's central piazza, Il Campo. The 17 neighborhoods, or contrade, of Siena compete for the honor of winning the palio each year. Read more about the Siena Palio Festival.
