What do you write about in your blog?
I use Italian words, expressions, names, and places to provide a window into Italy's language, culture, traditions, history, food and music. I try to combine an arresting visual image with bits of history, folklore, culture and humor--plus some useful or entertaining words and phrases and links to great Italian songs.
Why Did You Start Your Blog?
Over the last twenty-some years, Italian has become my passport into the heart of Italy. After writing LA BELLA LINGUA: MY LOVE AFFAIR WITH ITALIAN, THE WORLD'S MOST ENCHANTING LANGUAGE, I wanted to continue to share what I've learned with others. Italy and Italian make my soul smile--and I hope to return the favor by bringing a smile to others.
Advice
- Learn a little Italian--if only basics like please and thank you (per favore e grazie). Yes, many Italians understand and speak English, but they'll relate to you on a whole other level in Italian.
- Don't be inhibited. No one's going to quiz and grade you if you don't use the right verb form. Say things as simply as possible, and Italians will fill in the rest.
- Italy is more than a country; it's a culture. The more you learn about and appreciate it, the more meaningful every experience in Italy will be.
