Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi in Piazza Navona

My favorite site in Rome

Picking a favorite site in Rome is like asking what flavor gelato you prefer! There are many awesome places to visit in Rome but mine is probably Piazza Navona, one of the most famous piazzas in the world.

Why this is my favorite place in Rome

Piazza Navona was the first place my wife and I visited after arriving in Rome on the first of three trips to Italy. We walked from the Hotel Cicerone across the Ponte SantAngelo and then on to Piazza Navona. The site originally was a stadium built by Domitian in the year 86AD. It is long, oval and contains three magnificent fountains designed by Bernini and the church of Sant' Agnese in Agone. The largest fountain, located in the center, is the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi (the fountain of the four rivers) commissioned by Pope Innocent X in around 1650.

Advice

  • After admiring the fountains and the church we enjoyed a nice lunch under the umbrellas at Ristorante Tre Scalini located in the piazza.
  • By all means, research the places you visit in advance. It will enhance your understanding and appreciation of what you see.
