My Favorite Place in Tuscany

It is hard to pick a favorite Tuscan spot because it is such a beautiful area. When pushed it has to be Florence. My memories date back to spring 1967 when we arrived in the city by train. There were few tourists and though it is hard to believe way back then we had the Uffizi, the Accademai and David to ourselves. Because my husband and I were there on a buying trip we were fortunate enough to make friends, friends we still see when we go back to Florence. We were lucky enough to spend time with their families, enjoy their homes and children and we often felt like we were accepted as Florentines ourselves.

Why this is My Top Pick for Tuscany

Originally I loved the culture the city had to offer, the wonderful museums, the art and the residential areas above the city looking down over the wonderful cityscape. Because my husband and I were there to work we met Florentines who became close friends. Long after we no longer went to Florence on business we continued to return to indulge in the wonders of the city and to spend time with our friends. We celebrated weddings, births, promotions with them and cried over deaths and divorces. We often visited their Florence homes, vacationed in their summer places in Viareggio and Forte di Marme and attended family gatherings. We've driven all over Tuscany, stayed in little tiny towns at B&B's, at fancy hotels and some not so fancy, but for us Florence will always be our favorite place to visit. Some say it is too crowded, too hot in summer, too cold in winter, but for us it is perfect in any kind of weather.

Advice

  • Enjoy! Like every other city in the world it is not perfect, but mostly it is wonderful. Between the art, the food, the history and the people it is hard to pick a favorite.
